In ancient times in Japan, white, black and red were the three basic colors used in makeup. Using these colors skillfully, women enjoyed makeup in their own individual ways. Especially in Japan, which was called the Land of the Rising Sun, there is a long history that placed more value on the color “red” than antiquities. The red color called “Beni” has been deeply associated with women from ancient times, and thus has been used in the rites of passage and annual events of women. The passion for beauty among women can be sensed in these splendid makeup tools. Now and then the time women spent in front of a mirror applying makeup, taking care of their appearance and courtesy, is a special time. Even today these gorgeous cosmetic sets of ancient Japan are valued as excellent objects of art.
