Product Description
The hagi-yaki tea bowl’s century-long popularity amongst masters of the tea ceremony is illustrated in the old Japanese saying "First, Raku; second, Hagi; third Karatsu."
The hagi-yaki is slowly glazed for a long period of time in a Japanese chambered climbing kiln (noborigama).
Its soft texture and exterior glaze give it an unpretentious character. The bowl’s color and gloss will change after long years of use. This gradual development is highly valued in Japanese tradition. There is a saying: “the hagi keeps changing its appearance, time after time” (Hagi no nana bake). Thus the more the hagi is used, the more its deeper taste will be revealed.
This work is by Ou Okada, a highly regarded and very popular Japanese artist who embodies the modern incarnation of hagi-yaki.
