Isehan Honten was founded in 1825 in Nihonbashi in Edo (present Tokyo). Since then for more than 180 years, they have kept the same Beni manufacturing method. 99% of the pigment extracted from Benibana is yellow and only 1% is red. “ Beni” is produced from just that 1% of red pigment. It is a refined red coor with an emerald green glow. Catching the hearts of women throughout the city of Edo with its marvelous glow. Its exquisite shine is the art of craftsman, which wisdom and expertise was passed on by their predecessors. Even now, Beni is being crafted one by one in the same meticulous way by the hands of Beni-sho, Beni maestros. Komachi Beni is applied on the lips by using a Beni fude, lip brush that is moisten by water. Thinly applied, it creates a tender shade of pink and thickly applied, it gives the lips a vivid scarlet color. When it is generously applied by layer on layer, it creates the divine emerald glow that can be seen in the inside of Ochoko, the sake cup. By adjusting the amount of water or the number of layers, you can create your own individual shade of Beni. One Beni allows you to enjoy numeral shades of the color, to match your outfit. On a special occasion, why not wear Beni and enjoy standing out in the crowd. Ochoko, sake cup is used as container for the Beni. Ochoko from “Komachi Beni Genemon Kiln” is famous for being the true work of art created for Beni. Some 240 years have passed since Gen-emon Kiln was established in Zemeki, Arita, and throughout all this time, Gen-emon Kiln has kept the tradition of “Old Imari”, producing beautiful porcelain that has facinated people of various periods of time. The remarkable feature of Gen-emon Kiln is that each and every product is formed and painted “by hand”, utilizing the traditional techniques of Arita porcelain. The Beni and this ceramic art create a wonderful harmonious beauty, which we are sure you will come to enjoy. A free supplement of a Beni brush is included with the Beni.
