Major woodblock print work, a Japanese genre which made its influential mark on the arts of the entire world. Katsushika Hokusai, a master of printing on wood and paintings of the Edo period, has left behind a production of more than 30000 pieces. The 36 Views of Mont Fuji, is a series of prints that amazed the whole world and that continues to facinate us even today. It was produced between 1831 and 1833, during the peak of Hokusai’s artistic period, when he was around 72 years old, and is often considered to be his biggest masterpiece. At the first half of the period, as the title of the work indicates, Hokusai produced 36 prints, then afterwards he made 10 additional views, as this series show to be such a great success. One can really pleinement appreciate the liberty of the real Hokusai style, who showed a refined comprehension of several styles and painting technics. It is an audacious and original work that has had an impact on the Japanese painting style nihon-ga as well as Western paintings. As the work got instantly famous not just in in Japan but also in the Western world during the Edo period, it exerted enormous influence on Hokusai’s followers as well as Western artists like Van Gogh, Monet, and Debussy.
This ukiyo-e masterpiece has been reproduced on pale light violet Japanese paper, by using an offset printing process, that reproduces the colors perfectly. The case that includes the 10 additional views, contains in total 46 paintings.
